The Simplicity of God

30 09 2011

Simplicity of God

It is simple; He is ONE being.

Without parts, indivisible, and absolutely one.

“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.”

Deuteronomy 6:4

  • Thomas Aquinas, who thought the idea of divine simplicity is central, wrote in Summa Theologica that because God is infinitely simple, God can only appear to the finite mind as infinitely complex.

His attributes

Goodness, love, wrath, mercy, justice, omniscence, ect.

  • Every attribute of God is identical with his essence.
  • Each part of God is equally important and central

To say God has attributes that are more important than the other

belittling Him.

 How to maintain spiritual unity?

Ephesians 4:2

 “With all lowliness and
meekness, with patience, forbearing one another in love.”
